My newborn is 2 months and 3 weeks old and he has been consistently rubbing his eyelids. He rubs his left one more than his right so his left one is really swollen and red. It doesn't look as bad if he doesn't rub it for awhile but then it gets swollen again once he rubs it. I've tried putting petroleum jelly on his eyelids to see if that helps heal it faster but I think his constant rubbing is preventing it from getting better.

It seems like nowadays, breastfeeding and pumping are consuming most of my time. Ever since I had mastitis (see older blog post), I have been religiously pumping every 3-5 hours (depending on how much my son fed from my breasts) so that I don't get too engorged and feel pain again. Between diaper changes, feeding, comforting the baby when it's fussy time, bath time and comforting him to sleep, pumping is my #1 priority for any free time I have. Happy April Fool's Day! A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog about mastitis and how I was admitted to ER for this painful infection in my right boob. Well, I thought about it some more today and wondered how many breast feeders get mastitis? Is it a high percentage? I tried to look for a study on that but couldn't locate it.
The hospital gave me antibiotics to treat it and it went away a few days after but how did people treat it pre-antibiotic days? Did a lot of mothers die from it?
